Warkworth, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Norham and Edinburgh…as tantalizing a roll call of castles as you will ever find. Mix this with the riverside escape from the great city of Newcastle to the wide sea views over Whitley Bay and Druridge Bay, and the empty roads across the border you get close to cyclists’ paradise as you can in these isles.
At Berwick, you can continue along the newer route following the coast, past Eyemouth and past the sandy coastline of East Lothian and thence to Edinburgh. Or you can take the traditional option along the Tweed and through the Scottish Borders before crossing the Moorfoots and descending upon the great capital of the north.
