Lynemouth

Just a couple of kilometres up the road, the Lynemouth Community Trust (01670 863000) at the Lynemouth Resource Centre in Bridge Rd provides another handy stop-off point for the weary. Café, toilets, cycle parking, local info and basic cycle spares and free internet. You will be cycling past its front door.

The route now heads from urban to rural as you hit the coastline near Snab Point and Cresswell. Here you can eat at the Drifters Cafe Restaurant opposite the beach. There is very little in the way of amenities until Amble, some 18km north of Lynemouth. You are now on the edge of the Druridge Bay nature reserve, a large, sweeping sand and shingle bay (see p.30-31). This area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, when the forests were cleared and the dunes used for cattle grazing.

There are rock pools at low tide and sand dunes marking a natural barrier between land and sea. This is your first taste of typical Northumberland coastline.
